This all-in Latino community strategy is unprecedented in statewide campaigns in California, by either Democratic or Republican candidates.
The digital and radio ads start today on 40 Spanish language stations throughout California. The television ads on Spanish language stations will start later in September. This is in addition to nearly eight million pieces of mail that will be delivered throughout the general election.
"From the very start, we’ve said that Steve Garvey is the candidate to beat, and his performance in the primary proved that we were right," said Garvey campaign spokesman, Matt Shupe. "With this unprecedented, all-in Latino community strategy, we’re bringing Steve Garvey's message of consensus building, compassion, and common sense directly to Latino communities across California. Steve Garvey has spent over 50 years building a relationship with California’s Latino community, from his days playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres to today. As Steve Garvey said in the Telemundo/NBC LA primary election debate representing the Latino community in the U.S. Senate is his priority."
Garvey published an op-ed in La Opinion in Spanish on Aug. 2 titled Necesitamos soluciones migratorias viables y a largo plazo; la deportación masiva no es la respuesta (We need workable, long-term immigration solutions; mass deportation is not the answer.)
