Electric Vehicle Fire Forces Evacuations in Ojai

Jan 30, 2025 02:55PM ● By Assemblyman Tom Lackey 34th District News Release

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – In case you missed it, a fire caused by the battery of a Volvo XC90 hybrid forced evacuations in Ojai on Saturday morning, raising serious concerns about the risks posed by electric vehicles and the lack of a statewide plan to address these dangers.

The Los Angeles Times reported:

"The fire, which originated in the vehicle's battery, triggered a thermal runaway — a chemical chain reaction that creates uncontrollable heat and smoke. This dangerous event led to evacuations and heightened safety concerns in the area." Read the full story here.

Assemblyman Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale), a former California Highway Patrol officer and a vocal proponent of safeguarding our communities, released a statement following the incident:

"The electric vehicle fire in Ojai is another alarming reminder of the dangers posed by these types of incidents and the Governor’s lack of a comprehensive plan to keep our roads and neighborhoods safe," said Assemblyman Lackey.

The fire highlights the challenges faced by firefighters and first responders in addressing the unique risks posed by electric vehicle batteries.

"Governor Newsom has championed electric vehicles, but where is the guardianship when it comes to protecting our communities from the risks they present?" Lackey added. "Our firefighters, first responders, and citizens are on the frontlines of this problem. They deserve better guidance, better resources, and better leadership."

As California accelerates its transition to electric vehicles, the Governor must prioritize public safety and provide the resources needed to address these emerging risks.
