SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez is urging Governor Gavin Newsom to withdraw his proposal to cut California’s In-Home Supportive Services program by hundreds of millions of dollars. The plan would reduce overtime and travel compensation for caregivers and restrict care for thousands of seniors, disabled individuals, and families living in remote areas.
“IHSS is not a luxury—it is a lifeline,” said Gonzalez, whose son has cerebral palsy. “Cutting this support puts real people at risk, especially families in rural areas and families raising those with disabilities.”
Loved ones who rely on around-the-clock in-home care would be hit hardest by limits on caregiver hours. Rural communities would also suffer as caregivers often travel long distances and need flexible schedules to provide consistent support.
“These cuts would force families to make impossible choices: between work and care, between safety and survival,” said Gonzalez. “Governor Newsom must find a way to balance the budget without cutting critical care away from the people who need it the most. It is absolutely unacceptable.”
