SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez has introduced an urgent bill that would suspend California’s gas tax for one year, putting money back into the pockets of drivers as fuel prices remain among the highest in the nation.

The bill, AB 1745, would pause the state’s gas tax for one year, require that all savings be passed on to drivers, and increase transparency by showing gas tax savings on fuel receipts.

“Californians are being crushed by high gas prices, rising fuel costs, and unaffordable housing,” said Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez. “But instead of lowering costs, the Super Majority keeps trying to raise taxes even more. This bill prioritizes Californians by saving them money now and protecting their wallets.”

Right now, the average price of a gallon of gas in California is about $4.60, compared to less than $3.00 nationwide. California drivers pay over 50 percent more because of state taxes, strict regulations, and energy companies leaving California.

“At a time when families are making tough choices just to get by, the state shouldn't be making it more expensive to drive to work or take kids to school," Gonzalez added. “We won’t stop fighting to protect taxpayers and the promise made to hardworking Californians.”

AB 1745 was introduced on Feb. 9, 2026, and is an urgency measure designed to take effect immediately.
